Band Aid shows one of the many ways to raise charity funds

In 1984 the original Band Aid line-up was formed, consisting of a number of British and Irish musicians, and released the first version of the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”. Since then, the super group has been releasing new and updated versions of the song with an updated set list of artists each time. The purpose of the endeavour is to raise money and awareness for poverty and famine in Africa and has been proven to be successful with its intentions.

This year, in 2014, Band Aid 30 was released and includes stars such as One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding and Bono, amongst others. In its first week it sold more than 312,000 copies becoming the UK’s fastest selling single of 2014, with sales estimated to increase once the physical version is released in December. As the fourth version of the song that has been released, it has undergone slight changes to suit the modern day. Rather than focussing simply on the famine in Africa it is geared more towards the fight against Ebola which has been going in West Africa since earlier in the year. This single shows just one of the many ways that funds can be raised for a good cause. Another way is to invest in telephone fundraising.
